Quilting Terms

 

Bobbins -  a spool which thread is wound.

 

Churn Dash – quilt design refers to butter churning, a common task on most farms. 

 

Cotton – a soft white fiber plant grown in hot climates made up of fibers that are used to make thread and fabric.

 

Cotton Boll – the round seed pod of a cotton plant filled with the white fibers used for thread and fabric.

 

Dyeing – Method of changing the color of fabric.

 

Flying Geese – a quilt design illustrating geese flying in a v shape. . Geese were a source of meat, eggs and feathers.

 

Hand Card – tool used to separate cotton or wool before spinning.

 

Log Cabin – a quilt design illustrating the most common type of home during the 1800s.

 

Loom – a machine for weaving thread into fabric.

 

Reel – a quilt design illustrating reels or spools that wind up thread.

 

Spinning Wheel – a device used or spinning yard or thread by hand.

 

Weaving – to use fabric, yarn or thread in a zigzag pattern to create fabric or material.

 

Wool – the curly hair of a sheep used to make thread and fabric.

 

Yarn – thread used for knitting or making fabric.
