Internships

The Historic Sam Davis Home and Plantation is a historic treasure set on 168 serene acres in the heart of Smyrna, Tennessee. We welcome guests for tours, field trips, and an array of special events, weddings, and other special occasions, and so much more.

The Sam Davis Home and Museum offers several opportunities for hands-on learning, and first-hand experience, with on-site training and work experience. Through museum exhibits, the historic home, preserved farm land, and quality education programs, the imparts to its visitors the importance of learning about their past and its relevance to their present.

All internships are unpaid but make great résumé builders and may qualify for college credit. Below is a general description of some of the duties that may be required. However, it is not a comprehensive list, and other duties may be assigned.

Marketing and Events Internship

  • Create and organize digital images for marketing purposes

  • Research current marketing, public relations, and digital trends

  • Write and distribute press releases and marketing materials

  • Assist in the management of social media platforms

  • Assist in the development, planning and coordination of special events

 

Requirements, Abilities & Skills:

  • MUST be flexible with job tasks and quick thinker

  • A desire to work outdoors

  • Responsible, reliable, and dedicated to job performance

  • Commitment to being a team player

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Creative problem solving and ability to use available resources

Curatorial/Archival Internship

  • Assist with cataloging artifacts

  • Assist with artifact and historic structure cleaning. (Will be trained in the processes and procedures for proper cleaning of artifacts and the historic structures.)

  • Assist with updating PastPerfect software

  • Assist with research and temporary exhibitions

 

Requirements, Abilities & Skills:

  • MUST be flexible with job tasks and quick thinker

  • A desire to work in building lacking climate control

  • Responsible, reliable, and dedicated to job performance

  • Commitment to being a team player

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Creative problem solving and ability to use available resources

Education and School Programs Internship

  • Assist in school material preparation

  • Update Pre and Post Visit activities and lessons

  • Conduct student tours

  • Create lesson plans and worksheets

  • Grant research and writing

  • Assist with the management of field trips

  • Assist with the preparation and management of all camps (all seasons)

 

Requirements, Abilities & Skills:

  • Experience working with children is mandatory

  • A desire to work outdoors

  • Ability to teach activities to groups of all ages

  • Responsible, reliable, and dedicated to job performance

  • Commitment to being a team player

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Creative problem solving and ability to use available resources

  • First Aid and CPR skills are a plus, but not mandatory

Camp Internship 

  • Assist in camp material preparation

  • Assist in creating camp itinerary

  • Maintain camp registrations and emergency contact list

  • Develop and conduct before-care and after-care activities

  • Prepare camp materials for each day of camp

  • Run camp programs and activities with the Director of Education

 

Requirements, Abilities & Skills:  

  • Experience working with children is mandatory

  • A desire to work outdoors

  • Ability to teach activities to a groups, of all ages

  • Responsible, reliable, and dedicated to job performance

  • Commitment to being a team player

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Creative problem solving and ability to use available resources

  • First Aid and CPR skills are a plus, but not mandatory
