Days on the Farm

This is an annual event that you don’t want to miss. Step back in time and experience what life was like on a 19th century working farm. Spring was a busy time of the year with crops to be planted, animals to care for and so many other daily chores. Try your hand at spinning and weaving, visit the blacksmith, stop by the barn to see the animals…so many activities you will have so much fun!

Friday is open for field trips. Saturday is a public community day for families. *Regular admission rates apply. Bring your picnic lunch and stay for a full day of fun and hands on learning.

19th Century Art with Artist Lennie Fottrell

A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Lennie Fottrell has been drawing and painting for

over 20 years. He uses pencil, pen and ink, silverpoint and watercolor to create works of art

depicting birds, wildlife and other animals, in a realistic style.

A Geologist by education, he experiments with historical paint pigments made from

powdered rocks and minerals, reproducing some of the types of paint used in the

18th and 19th century, prior to the invention of modern manufactured pigments.

“Historical art materials are very interesting to make and use. Some techniques and

materials have been around for centuries, but have fallen into obscurity as more

modern paints and other manufactured artist materials have taken their place.

Some paints made from natural earth materials, plants, and simple 18th

and 19th century manufacturing processes, look different from modern paint pigments. By

working with these materials, historical artist techniques can be seen and understood

first hand, as living history.”

Join us for a talk and demonstration and you will be amazed and inspired. *Regular admission rates.

Meet the Author & Book Signing. Larry J. Daniel

Join us for this Meet & Greet/ Book Signing and pick up a copy of Larry J. Daniel’s newest book.

Conquered: Why the Army of Tennessee Failed (Civil War America) Hardcover – May 20, 2019

Operating in the vast and varied trans-Appalachian west, the Army of Tennessee was crucially important to the military fate of the Confederacy. But under the principal leadership of generals such as Braxton Bragg, Joseph E. Johnston, and John Bell Hood, it won few major battles, and many regard its inability to halt steady Union advances into the Confederate heartland as a matter of failed leadership. Here, esteemed military historian Larry J. Daniel offers a far richer interpretation. Surpassing previous work that has focused on questions of command structure and the force's fate on the fields of battle, Daniel provides the clearest view to date of the army's inner workings, from top-level command and unit cohesion to the varied experiences of common soldiers and their connections to the home front. Drawing from his mastery of the relevant sources, Daniel's book is a thought-provoking reassessment of an army's fate, with important implications for Civil War history and military history writ large.

*we will have copies of the book available for sale in the Museum Store. This is a free event.
